Your senses enveloped in chaos- a chaos of laughter and celebration, sent and savor. There is nothing in the streets that can soothe the impatient heart. You surrender into it or you suffer. So what.. you can't move very fast, in fact all you can do is shuffle, still it's a clutter of happiness and everyone is having a great time. If this were NYC i think "rage" might overflow the pavement- but it's not. It's Taiwan and social harmony here is never more clear than when in places like this. I have come to love how they handle such matters and I feel a have adapted to this way of being- for the better.
Warm apricot seed milk 杏仁奶 keeps me company while walking from vendor to vendor. I stop and relish in the back sesame seed 黑芝麻, Chinese yam 山藥 and wolfberry fruit 枸杞子 delights. Brushing shoulders by the 100's, lathered in voices, sandalwood incense drifting from temples afar, charing treats, megaphones ringing your ears, all the while the red envelopes are cracking open, hitting the floor to then be scuffed by shuffling feet. I watch the New Years money go drifting like smoke from incense into the hands of merchants that make these mouths so happy. My lucky stars Eric Brand was in town during this time so we had lunch with Nigel Wiseman and Paola and enjoyed savory, fragrant dishes among great minds. A great start to a great new year indeed...I have much to look forward to in these days to come- the year of the Tiger is starting to purrrrrrr...
